Mokuhanga
Mokuhanga, or Japanese woodblock printing, has a rich history and unique characteristics that set it apart from Western woodcut techniques. Originating in China during the Tang Dynasty, woodblock printing was later adopted and refined in Japan during the Edo period.
One of the distinctive features of Mokuhanga is its use of water-based inks, which allow for subtle gradations of color and a softer, more organic appearance compared to the bold lines of Western woodcuts with oil-based inks.
Mokuhanga is not only used for creating iconic ukiyo-e prints but it also is employed as a commercial art for printing books. Its influence extended beyond Japan, inspiring Impressionist artists in Europe with its emphasis on capturing light, color, and atmosphere.
Today, Mokuhanga continues to be practiced by contemporary artists, valued for its environmentally friendly nature, as well as its ability to convey a unique expression and aesthetic.
Instructor
Since 2003, Mia O has immersed herself in the practice of mokuhanga. Beginning with an invitation to Nagasawa Art Park, she refined her skills under Master Baren Maker Hidehiki Goto and shared her passion for printing through her workshops at CFSHE gallery, Tokyo in 2018. Currently, she is advancing her carving techniques with Woodblock Carver Motoharu Asaka. Her work is recognized and exhibited internationally.

I am delighted to extend an invitation to individuals of all experience levels, including beginners, to explore the art of Mokuhanga at Mokuhanga Den. The workshops are thoughtfully designed to accommodate and enrich participants from diverse artistic backgrounds.
* Personalized One-to-One Mokuhanga Lessons
I am pleased to offer personalized one-to-one Mokuhanga lessons, meticulously tailored to meet individual artistic needs and objectives. These private sessions are designed to provide undivided attention and customized guidance, ensuring that each participant achieves their specific learning goals in the art of Japanese woodblock printing.
2. Studio Facilities:
* Materials are included. Maximum size up to A4 (2-3 days workshop)
* Participants can bring their own materials if preferred.
3. Price(Yen): Full-day workshops - 10 am ~ 5 pm

To accommodate varying levels of interest and availability, I am pleased to offer customizable workshop durations for the Mokuhanga courses. Participants may choose from the following options:
- Two or Three-day Workshop: Ideal for beginner or those seeking a brief introduction to the techniques
- Two to Five-Day Workshops: Recommended for individuals who wish to delve deeper into the mokuhanga, practice advanced techniques, and complete a more comprehensive project.
- Example of One-on-One Lesson Pricing : 2-day (42,000)/3-day (63,000) / 5-day ( 100,000) * This information may change based on requirements and number of participants.
- convenience store bento meals are served for lunch
- Coffee or tea and snacks are also provided.
*Once you have selected the desired duration for your workshop—from one to five days or a long term stay—please inform me of your decision. Upon receiving your selection, I will promptly provide you with the specific fee details for the chosen workshop via email.

5. Facilities and Terms of Use: Participants are expected to maintain cleanliness and quietness during the class and assist with cleanup afterward.

7. Access to Fukuyama:
by Shinkansen
Fukuyama is easily accessible by shinkansen, with Nozomi and Sakura trains stopping at JR Fukuyama Station.
From Tokyo :Around 3 hours 40 minutes, Shin-Osaka: around 1 hour, Hakata: around 1 hour 30mins, Kagoshima: around 3 hours
by Airports
It's conveniently located between Hiroshima and Okayama Airports, making travel from Japan and abroad simple. Major expressways also provide a smooth drive to the city.
